The Rotary Club of College Station held its annual VIVA (Very Impressive Vocational Achievement) awards ceremony at its regular breakfast meeting on November 9, 2023.   This year, eight Instructional Assistants were introduced by their school’s principal and recognized for their outstanding service to the College Station public schools, teachers and students.  Each awardee received a check for $500 and a plaque commemorating the award.  Each awardee’s school also received a commemorative plaque.

Annually, the College Station Rotary Club celebrates groups of individuals in our communities who serve the public.  The award began in 1998, Fain McDougal created the VIVA Rotary Service Award for persons in the community who exhibit outstanding service and exemplify the ideas of the Four-Way Test.  VIVA stands for Very Impressive Vocational Achievement and is intended to recognize individuals who are not principal business owners or managers but who provide exemplary service, improving the days of those they serve.

Beginning in 2021,  and under the leadership of Cherrie Pullium, the award became directed annually at a defined group of individuals who serve the community with the first group recognized being the librarian assistants in our public libraries.  This year’s group are the paraprofessionals known as teaching assistants and without whom our educational system would struggle.  While it is impossible to recognize all of the superb work done by this group of individuals, 8 people have been selected from among a large group of nominees from the ranks of College Station Independent School District.
