A recent email from Rebecca (Feb. 2012):

Just on the train back from Alloway Rotary Club.  Gave my ninth presentation tonight.  I was really excited tonight because I was surprisingly calm before presenting.  The Rotarians here have grown on me and I feel that I have acclimated to the personalities of different clubs.  Each club is different but they all have something unique and interesting.  It is also encouraging because I had several Rotarians approach me saying how well I am presenting myself and Rotary.  The president of Alloway Club even talked with me briefly about reaching high for my future because you never know till you try.  Just reminded me how that could be my motto for the two years.  It seems like just yesterday I was filling out the Ambassadorial Scholarship Application and fretting over interviews.  Now I have made it five months living in another country and interacting with Rotarians on a new level.

We are through the worst of the winter here in Glasgow.  It has been fairly warm this week but still raining off and on.  I have gotten use to not even using an umbrella because it just gets destroyed by the wind.  But the weather hasn’t stopped me enjoying Scotland.  Last week, I attended two different Burns suppers.  Here in Scotland they have suppers to celebrate Robert Burns, the poet.  It is full of traditional Scottish food, music, poetry readings, and speeches.  I thoroughly enjoyed both of the dinners.  And for the second one, Ian and Louise (my Rotary host counsellors) asked me to give the “Toast to Scotia!”  I was pretty nervous because it is meant to be a funny, light-hearted speech about all things Scottish.  Since most in the audience were more mature than me, I wasn’t sure how they would respond to my attempts at humour.  But I am excited to say it went great!  They laughed when I wanted to laugh and many people told me after the dinner that it was a great speech.  I prefaced my speech by saying I had Scottish heritage so any fun I poked at Scotland was toward myself as well.  The Scots have a great sense of humour themselves so they make for an easy crowd.

The next semester is looking to be an exciting one.  My classes are getting started very well and assignments are really interesting so far.  Dissertation is still intimidating me but we have a series of lectures that are describing the process and helping get thoughts started for topics.  I am so excited to be headed to Venice, Italy in March with class!  Only eight people from our course are going and it will be focused on luxury brand marketing.  We are going to Venice because Strathclyde partners with another university there.  They have a week of intensive lectures scheduled for us.  It will include guest lecturers from the marketing department of big name brands and fieldtrips to different firms.  It is costing a little more but the opportunity to learn from the best in the business is amazing.  Also, the chance to put this learning experience on my CV is a chance of a lifetime!

Well, I think that is all for now.  Still loving Scotland and having a great time!

Love and Luck,      Rebekah
